Isometric has certified its new Improved Soil Management Protocol, which sets out rules for measuring, certifying, and monitoring carbon dioxide removal and reduction from improved land management. The protocol mandates direct soil sampling, alone or combined with validated modelling, and requires projects to account for all associated greenhouse gas emissions. It also includes strict environmental and social safeguards, such as a minimum 20% revenue share for enrolled landowners. Three project developers, Great Yellow, hectares Cultivo, and HGX, have registered to generate CDR certificates under this new protocol. Isometric states that this protocol aims to increase demand for soil-based carbon dioxide removal, which has the potential to remove up to 430 million tonnes of atmospheric CO2 annually.
