Verra has launched a public consultation on a major revision (ID #M0226) to its VM0044 methodology for biochar utilisation in soil and non-soil applications. The consultation runs from 15 July to 17 August 2026 and aims to update the framework to version 2.0. The proposed revision replaces the standardised positive list approach with a project-specific method for additionality and expands feedstock eligibility to include invasive species and non-purpose-grown residues. It also introduces specific physical monitoring rules for H:Corg ratio, moisture levels, material transport emissions, and long-term storage protocols. This update seeks to strengthen transparency, accuracy, and environmental conservativeness, aligning with global benchmarks for carbon dioxide removal tracking.
