The UN's Article 6.4 Supervisory Body approved the first carbon credits under the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism in February 2026, stemming from a clean-cooking project in Myanmar. A report by several NGOs, including Global Forest Coalition, criticises the approval, stating the project operates in conflict-affected regions and partners with the military junta's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC), which is under EU sanctions. The report alleges that companies like Korea Electric Power Corporation are purchasing credits from a regime accused of human rights abuses. The South Korean NGO Climate Change Center, which runs the project, stated it continues to operate in accordance with international standards and procedures, having initiated the programme in 2018 before the 2021 military takeover.
