Verra has opened a public consultation from 15 July to 17 August 2026, for a significant revision to its VM0044 methodology for biochar use in soil and non-soil applications. The proposed version 2.0 expands eligibility to existing biochar production plants and high-technology facilities, and includes novel applications like biochar-amended concrete. Key changes involve replacing the standardised additionality approach with a project method, broadening feedstock eligibility to include invasive species, and introducing new monitoring procedures for parameters such as hydrogen to organic CO2 ratio. This revision aims to enhance accuracy and transparency, aligning with current scientific evidence and best practices in biochar production. The original VM0044 v1.2 received approval from the ICVCM in 2025 as meeting Core Carbon Principles, and Verra plans to submit the revised version for reassessment.
