Gazelle white paper outlines grassland carbon methodology challenges and recommendations

Gazelle published a white paper on 3 July 2024, identifying methodological challenges in generating carbon credits from grassland conservation. The paper highlights the unreliability of remote sensing for certain baseline scenarios and the lack of grassland-specific methodologies in avoided-conversion projects. It recommends developing more rigorous protocols, integrating digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) solutions, and utilising ISO 14064-2 standards. The International Carbon Registry (ICR) supports this approach, using ISO 14064-2 in the absence of established methodologies. Grasslands are expected to provide 24% of Nature-Based Solutions credits by 2050.
