Microsoft has finalised a 10-year offtake agreement with carbon removal developer Liferaft for one million biochar carbon removal units. Facilitated by Supercritical, this represents the largest US biochar transaction to date. The carbon credits will be generated from Liferaft's industrial production facilities in Iowa and Illinois. This agreement addresses historical challenges in scaling biochar deployment by establishing consistent, large-scale removal streams with robust monitoring, reporting, and verification standards.
