SBTi updates Net-Zero Standard to V2, introduces new 'Ongoing Emissions Responsibility' framework

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released version 2.0 of its Net-Zero Standard, incorporating changes from two public consultations and pilot tests. A key update is the replacement of 'Beyond Value Chain Mitigation' (BVCM) with 'Ongoing Emissions Responsibility' (OER), which integrates carbon removals and neutralisation. From 2035, Category A companies will be required to support carbon removals under the OER framework, impacting credit buyers. Companies submitting new targets after 31 January 2028 must use V2.0, with the validation portal for V2.0 submissions expected to open in Q1 2027.
